The program, through interviews of former drug addicts shows the damage that this social problem caused in their lives and the struggle it took to get out. The program then moves to consider the pastoral work of Fr. Hans Stapel, German missionary priest, who established the first drug rehabilitation farm ten years ago simply using the techniques of hard work and prayer. The project is called the Fazenda of Hope. The documentary follows the young Brazilians as they go through rehabilitation and through interviews, reveals the struggle to over-come the addiction. Brazilian government officials are also interviewed who affirm the success of this project in Brazil. Today the project is so successful that Fr Hans Stapel has eleven farms in Brazil and has been asked by the German government to establish similar farms in Germany. The documen-tary then follows Fr. Hans as he returns to Germany to open the first Fazenda near Berlin.

It was his first visit to Latin America since becoming Pope in April 2005. In an departure from the normal diplomatic and Church focused protocol, Pope Benedict XVI took time to visit some 2000 former drug addicts gathered at the uniquely successful Catholic drug addiction rehabilitation project called the Fazenda da Esperanca or “Farms of Hope” close to Guaratingueta, Brazil. The project is considered one of the most efficient drug rehabilitation systems in the world, with 82% of the addicts who finish the one-year internship free of their drug addiction after five years. This short program documents the papal visit to this unique project, the effect that this had on the young recovering drug addicts and the impact of the youthful enthusiasm on the Holy Father who declared that it had been “2 hours of joy.”

Most addicts are young people from 18 to 30 years old. The Russian Federal Service of Drug Control has stated that the scale and the speed drug-addiction in Russia is such that it threatens the countrys national security. Halfway between St. Petersburg and Lake Ladoga Archpriest Sergiy Belkov has founded the first Russian Orthodox drug rehabilitation centre. The centre lives following the rules of a monastic community: for those in rehabilitation, obligatory church services and prayers, and to work as requested. With no medical intervention, only through labour, prayer and love, up to 80% of those who enter are cured. As a result, drug addicted from throughout Russia increasingly come to this small parish. This 27-minute documentary recounts the testimony of those struggling through the rehabilitation program as well as those who have offered their lives to serve.
