A. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is the severe end of a spectrum of effects that can occur when a woman drinks during pregnancy. Fetal death is the most extreme outcome. FAS is a disorder characterized by abnormal facial features, and growth and central nervous system (CNS) problems. If a pregnant woman drinks alcohol but her child does not have all of the symptoms of FAS, it is possible that her child has an alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND). Children with ARND do not have full FAS, but may demonstrate learning and behavioral problems caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. NOFAS has both radio and TV PSA’s available to help communities spread the FASD prevention message, including the award winning Infinite Power PSA. A new television Public Service Announcement cautioning women about the risk of drinking alcohol while pregnant produced by Women in Film’s Los Angeles Chapter for the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS) has won the 2005 Gold Aurora Award. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is America’s leading known preventable cause of mental retardation and birth defects. Even though FASD is completely preventable when pregnant women abstain from alcohol, as many as 32000 infants are born with alcohol-related problems each year. NOFAS advises women who are pregnant or could be pregnant to abstain from alcohol.
