Yes, the difference is a methyl group on the amine portion of the molecule. Methamphetamine has an N-methyl group while amphetamine does not. The extra methyl group dramatically affects the compounds observed biological effect as well – in this case, increasing the strength of the drug dramatically…

Amphetamine = Ph-CH2-CH(NH2)-CH3
Methamphetamine = Ph-CH2-CH(NHCH3)-CH3

As long as you provide a complete list of all your Rx meds, then you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. I haven’t heard about Meridia doing that.

The difference is in dosage and strength. Adderall is administered in pills measured in ‘milligrams’. Methampehtamine is substantially stronger, and generally dosed in hundreds of milligrams to grams at a time. They are essentially identical drugs, differing in potency, with the same withdrawal effects. The difference is that because Adderall is less potent (contains ‘amphetamine’ not ‘methamphetamine’) getting off it tends to be somewhat easier.

Question by bluedaisy: Survey: Do you know anyone who is addicted to meth amphetamines?
I have 4 people in my life whom I love that are addicted to meth. I feel like I need to do something to help stop this epidemic. I am tired of seeing lives with so much potential destroyed by this horrible drug. So I am taking a survey to see if I can get an idea of how bad it really is. Please tell me if you have any helpful info on the subject. thank you.
