Good centre….wrong place to be sourcing for funds though, try targeting the people you would like to assist you with your centre you get better luck that way and you save the face of your centre, because such postings look bad on your centre.

how do they work?

Question by Volvogirl: how do they work?
well, how do rehabilitation centres work? i have a class assignment and i wanted to this stuff? it’s probably different for drugg addiction, self mutilation, alcoholism etc… can u brief about it? how do they start, wat kinda medication they put u on? how long is the time between the intervention and when u reach the centre?

Answer by glistam3
There are vast differences depending on the type. First of, “rehabilitation” is a term that specifically is reserved for addiction (drugs or alcohol). The press loves to fling “rehabilitation” around to describe everything any celebrity does that involves “going to a place because one has a problem,” but that’s misusing the term.

Anyhow, [true] rehab centers require a medical evaluation on entry, and the applicant must meet specific criteria for addiction. People who are not conclusively drug addicted are tossed out immediately and guided to whatever they actually need. Once the applicant is admitted, they are barred from bringing any chemical in, even Tylenol or aftershave. Most rehab centers will not put the patient on any meds unless they are required for that person to survive (like insulin for diabetes) but they must get them as-needed from the nurse.

Now, for other issues, like self-mutilation, nervous break-downs or other mental illness, a person undergoes voluntary enrollment in a mental institution or psych ward in a hospital. This is not called rehab. Most psych wards are designed for these voluntary patients, because involuntary enrollment is rare (this is being “committed” and requires a powerful court order from a judge). Those go to a separate area or hospital most of the time.
The voluntary patients are put on medication that is specific to their mental health needs, and this is prescribed by a psychiatrist. Most often the patient must stay for a fixed period for observation even if they want to leave (in Maryland it’s three days).
Now, for all of the above, there may or may no be an intervention. Some folks have a enough sense to check themselves in without anybody making them. However, if there is an intervention, the idea it get them to whichever center as quickly as possible, and it varies by situation. Interventions are not regulated, legal events and anybody can do them (though it’s much better to hire a professional counselor who is familiar).

If someone is trying to get clean and sober and keeps using, but always wants my help, what do I do?

July 26, 2010 - 1:14 pm 11 Comments

Question by worldpeaceplse: If someone is trying to get clean and sober and keeps using, but always wants my help, what do I do?
A friend habitually drinks after around thirty days clean and sober, but wants to get help from me and does not want me to give up on them. Every time there is a relapse there is guilt and shame, but a week later wants to continue to try. I do not know what to do, and I am growing weary of this situation. They could die from late stage alcoholism, but cannot go into in-patient rehabilitation, due to circumstances. I have been there for them and also in recovery. What should I do that will be most effective that might click?

Best answer:

Answer by FORZA ITALIAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!
Tell them the truth – that you are sick and tired of the cycle and can’t do anything to help them if they don’t honestly want to help themselves. Say “DUDE- YOU ARE GONNA DIE!!!” and see where that gets ya. Tell them to check into treatment. There’s really nothing you can do – it’s up to him to make those choices in his life.

Q&A: Can I receive assistance from child services if i file for temporary custody?

July 26, 2010 - 1:14 pm 1 Comment

Question by Mr. doing what’s right: Can I receive assistance from child services if i file for temporary custody?
The child is my 2 year old third cousin, I am in New York (Bronx County) and the child is in another county in the southwest region of New York state. She is my cousin through way of her father which has been incarcerated for over 2 years (repeat offender)

So here is some brief information on the situation. The little girls mom has been in and out of rehabilitation battling alcoholism for over 25 years. She already has 2 older children removed from her care many years ago. About a year ago, the child was placed in foster care since mom had a relapse. I found out 5 months later at which point i got involved to try to foster her while mom received the care she needed to eventually get her back. My family and I (I have a girlfriend of 4 years and a step daughter who is 5 and a half) have made several trips to inquire about her case and situation and most importantly, to try to motivate “mom” and spend time with the little girl.

Since my 2 year old cousin has been with her current foster mother for a going on a year in a couple of months and due to the fact, that mom is not showing as much progress as she should, i am thinking of filing for custody before her foster man has rights to adopt her and frankly, can do and take my cousin away from all of us.

My question is, when i file for custody, can any of the counties assistst me financially with the baby. I’m the only one working currently and my though i make “decent” money, i have entirely too many expenses to take on the additional responsibility of a child. I’m torn though because i know she belongs with family.

Answer by justagrandma
As a third cousin that may not be close enough to be considered family to the court.
If you qualify for foster parent status you may receive a stipend, but that would end once you adopt the child. Until the child is adopted it would not belong to your family and you would be under supervision of CPS.
And the child could still be removed or returned to a closer relative or her mother or father when they get out.
Truthfully, if you are happy with the foster situation now, and they want to adopt the child then I’d leave it alone.
The welfare of the child and her security is more important than a third cousin who can’t really afford another child. The welfare of the child should always be paramount and you can’t assure that if you need the money she would bring as a foster child and you can lose that if you adopt her.

Q&A: Good Old Washington DC. Don’t You Just Love It When the Politicos Get Caught?

Question by rarefind: Good Old Washington DC. Don’t You Just Love It When the Politicos Get Caught?
WASHINGTON – Former Rep. Mark Foley under FBI investigation for e-mail exchanges with teenage congressional pages, has checked himself into a rehabilitation facility for alcoholism treatment and accepts responsibility for his actions, his attorney said Monday.

“I strongly believe that I am an alcoholic and have accepted the need for immediate treatment for alcoholism and other behavioral problems,” Foley said in a statement, Roth told the AP.

And Tony Snow, White Press Secretary says with a smile:
“Oh, this was just a matter of a few “naughty” e-mails
omg!

And so now, Foley sees the need for alcohol rehabilitation, because he “likes teenage boys”
omg! this is so ridiculous !

And Debra LaFave sees the need for treatment for her
“bipolar” because she likes a 14 year old boy
omg this is so ridiculous !

Too bad Clinton didn’t see the need for “bj obsession treatment”
because he liked bj’s.
omg this is so ridiculous !

Excuses, excuses excuses !
Washington !
Ah Fruitsna.
I know yu feel a need to vent sometimes. But this is politics..not what your man did or did NOT do. So listen. I’m 23 and a female. Not promiscuous. But I tell you men are ENTIRELY different from women. A man might get horny 50 – 60 times a day. It’s not that he doesn’t love his wife, if he has one; he just wants a new experience. That’s the ‘dog’ in a man. And Most just can’t help it. Most are just plain dogs! Your husband may well have still loved you. Never know…Just accept iiittt! And if he ever comes crawing back, taaakkke him! No matter who he was with, no matter how many times, he was still YOUR husband. Not hers.
Remember that.

Q&A: I need to find alcohol rehabs in Clementon, New Jersey. Suggestions?

July 26, 2010 - 1:14 pm 1 Comment

Question by adina s: I need to find alcohol rehabs in Clementon, New Jersey. Suggestions?
I need to find alcohol rehabilitation centers for my dad. He’s in Clementon, which is so far away from where I am. I have only just gotten wind of the news that he’s now suffering from alcoholism. I don’t know what to do. He’s asking for my help and the only thing I could think of is that he has to get himself treated. I don’t know how to find alcohol rehabs, though.

Best answer:

Answer by annelise il
Finding alcohol rehabs is fairly easy. The links below will be able to help you out. You can also ask your dad to get recommendations from doctors or healthcare providers. Just keep on getting in touch with him. Talk to him on the phone or send him encouraging messages. This might just be little things, but your moral support will help him get by. I do hope he recovers soon.

Is alcoholism/drug addiction a disease?

July 26, 2010 - 1:13 pm 22 Comments

Question by blu: Is alcoholism/drug addiction a disease?
I’m sure this has been asked many times but allow me to put a little spin on the question by asking many other questions of relevance.
Do you think one of the above qualifies but not the other?
Do you think the government is sending mixed messages by one being legal and not the other?
Should the government be using ‘tax on alcohol’ money toward treatment for alcoholics?
Are we winning the war against drugs?
Would we see a decrease in drug usage if the tax money on the sales of legalized drugs was used toward education, prevention and rehabilitation?
Do these questions cause you to reevaluate your position?
I get particular enjoyment posing my questions to the ‘seniors’. I have the utmost respect for them and I value their opinions no matter how wrong they are … lol.
I expect/hope to hear f/ Just Joyce, Dee Jay, oldman, Mr. Ed, Plum Ecc, Miz D, shortstuff, etc. You know who you are. Tell me what you think.
aguadelf … the following is a quote f/ your statement … A disease is something you could not possibly have any control over.
Regardless of how one became dependent (there are examples of ppl becoming drug addicts thru the administration of drugs in the hospital) the fact remains that these ppl have no control over their dependency.
Sally- You ARE an authority. Anyone w/ 22 yrs. of sobriety after dependency knows more than the so called authorities.
Just Joyce- Education IS the key. Most dependent ppl struggle with, “If I only knew then what I know now I would have never started”.
One is too many and 1000 is never enough.
glass- It already IS everyone’s problem. The increase in crime due to dependent ppl. ALONE is enough for the country to take a united stand toward DECREASING the users. The problem continues to get worse.
Whether you know it or not, many tax dollars are already being spent toward county funded beds for rehab enrollees.
Keep your head in your butt and the problem will go away.
Miz D- Anyone that comes f/ a family that has a genetic predisposition to alcohol/drug abuse is in a position where they need the education that much more.
This country doesn’t do nearly enough as evidenced by a 40+ yr. war on drugs that has resulted in more usage and an over crowded prison system.
How bad does it have to get before this country changes it’s position?
