Question by Autismmomof2: Is there something I can take to lose weight after meth addiction?
I have been sober for over 15 years however I have gained 100 lbs. I am over 50 years old and I was pregnant 3 times, quit smoking and have a stressed life with Autistic child and abusive mother. I may be bipolar from all the stress in life and being a reformed drug addict. Is there something I can or should be taking to control my weight gain and depression together? Thanks for all your honest and knowledgable answers.

You should consult with a doctor about this.

As a recovering meth addict, I assume that you are probably limiting or avoiding any sort of stimulants. Most weight loss medicines over the counter are really just stimulants, so I would suggesting staying away from them.

You’ll probably need to examine your dietary needs and plan a responsible weight loss strategy with your doctor or nutritionist. Your doctor might also explore medical reasons for your weight gain. Yes it can also be related to depression, so, your doctor will also consider that. You may be referred to certain specialists to make sure you are getting the right comibnation of expertise for your individual situation, if necessary.

Good luck, and HUGE congratulations on being sober for 15 years!

Eat fruit instead of drinking fruit juice. For the calories in one kid-size box of apple juice, you can enjoy an apple, orange, and a slice of watermelon. These whole foods will keep you satisfied much longer than that box of apple juice, so you’ll eat less overall.

Being a recovering addict, you should really be avoiding any kind of drugs. You should really just be looking to lose weight the normal way. And the easiest way to start that is to get educated about your weight issues and make some hard decisions.

At 50, you have to realize that any kind of healthy weight loss program will be one that is life changing, as in you will have to change your life. There are probably foods that you have to eliminate permanently from your diet and others that you have to incorporate into your diet. But basically you will have to reduce calorie intake and increase calorie output. Less food and more exercise.

It’s easier to reduce calories if you eliminate the high calorie foods and learn to like the low calorie ones. I like to think in term of rules:

    a) if it’s white if ain’t right – white floor, white rice, sugar, salt – all need to be reduced
    b) alcohol bad – don’t drink – it kills your metabolism and is full of empty calories
    c) fruits and veggies good – eat fresh as much as you want
    d) processed foods bad
    e) snack foods bad
    f) fast food bad.

It’s also easier to increase calorie output if you find activities and exercises that you like and that fit into your life. If you’re not sure, just start walking every day.

    Good luck!
