A friend of mine likes to get drunk about once a month, because he enjoys losing control. He described a typical night of partying as being 12 drinks. He also claims that he would be fine to drive after this, and I’m wondering if he has an alochol problem.

Could be, it’s really hard to say really. It can have many masks, and perhaps he just likes the rush of everything. Just because he likes to pick one time of the month to get drunk doesn’t necessarily mean he’s an alcoholic. If he feels he “needs” the drink or can’t go a month without it, then yes there’s a possibility he is an alcoholic. Even say if he is, you can’t force anyone to change theirs ways.

Alcoholic, maybe not..but a binge drinker!
“Binge drinking used to mean drinking heavily over several days. Now, however, the term refers to the heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time (just as binge eating means a specific period of uncontrolled overeating).
Today the generally accepted definition of binge drinking in the United States is the consumption of five or more drinks in a row by men — or four or more drinks in a row by women — at least once in the previous 2 weeks. Heavy binge drinking includes three or more such episodes in 2 weeks.”
“Some studies have shown that people who binge-drink heavily — those who have three or more episodes of binge drinking in 2 weeks — have some of the symptoms of alcoholism.”

According to the CDC, its men consume 5 or more drinks, and when women consume 4 or more drinks, in about 2 hours.
If you’re getting it on and want a clear head the next day, take a shot of this with every 3-4 standard drinks:

Definately a binge drinker, and danger to society, not just himself.
